National Recognition

St. John School was one of five Catholic schools nationwide to receive the Distinguished Home/School Award at the National Catholic Education Association Convention in Milwaukee, WI in April 2001.  The award gives recognition to schools with exemplary Home/School Associations (parent clubs) for specific projects that enhance or expand a school’s curriculum.

St. John was recognized for our parents’ efforts to raise more than $23,000 to enhance an existing multi-purpose room and hire an art curriculum consultant.  The end result was a “Multi-Arts Room” where painting, sculpture, and drawing can take place under the supervision of parent volunteers.  In the fall of 2000, we “christened” our improved Multi-Arts room with a cooperative painting in the style of Jackson Pollock. The new space allows the children to “get messy.”

SRA Art Connections, the curriculum framework, provides direction for the art program. Classroom teachers and parent volunteers work in unision to help children produce, explore, and create art. Students’ art work brightens the school’s hallways and stairwells.
