CYO Cross Country and Soccer Updates

Our CYO teams are off to a fantastic start! Our athletes and coaches are committed to the play like a champion concept that focuses on sportsmanship. They are great representatives of St. John School, and we are so proud of them! Read on to find out the latest.

Cross Country

With over 100 students participating this fall, the St. Al/John team is full of enthusiasm and team spirit. Thank you to the many parent volunteers who helped with practice and at our first meet on Sunday, 9/19. Highlights:

  • 8th-grade Girls took the top 3 spots led by Nuala H., Dahnya C., and Ella S.
  • 8th-grade Boys took the top 2 spots plus 3 more spots in the top 12, led by Henry H. and Jake H.
  • Henry H. set a course record of 7:53.9 on the 1.5 mile course.
  • Dylan G. won the 6th-grade boys division.
  • Overall a total of 12 top 5 finishes and 20 top 10 finishes across the 10 timed heats
  • 50 K-3 untimed finishers

Soccer

With over 430 PreK-8th grade students and over 60 volunteer coaches, the St. Al/John soccer program is a living example of our inclusive, supportive and dedicated community. While our PreK- 4th-grade teams neither win nor lose (scores are not counted) one of the great attributes of CYO is the progression. Scoring and playoffs start in grade 5. After two weeks of play, all but one of our playoff-eligible middle school teams are undefeated. The six middle school teams have scored 42 goals in two games all the while honoring the commitment and guidelines of play like a champion while having fun on the pitch.

CYO Athletics – PLACT: Coaches Training and Parent Like a Champion Today Workshop

Coaches     PLACT – Play Like A Champion Today – In addition to Safe Environment, all volunteers who will be coaching any CYO sport are required to take the Play Like A Champion Today (PLACT) Coaches Training unless this is their first season coaching in CYO Athletics. There is a required Pre-Course that needs to be completed at least 12 hours before the virtual training. Volunteer coaches do not have to take the Parent Like a Champion Today workshop if they attend Coaches Training. Details and registration can be found at TeamSideline. Note: Parents who have already completed this training will need refresher courses after the first two years.

Parents     PLACT – Parent Like A Champion Today – Parents who are not coaches are required to attend a Parent Like a Champion workshop (only one parent needs to attend). Note:  coaches who have already completed the PLACT Coaches Training program are not required to also attend a Parent Like A Champion workshop. Registration can be found at TeamSideline. Note: Parents who have already completed this workshop (and are not coaches) do not need to attend this workshop again.
