Arts & Music
The arts and music are woven into the school day at St. John School. Throughout the year, art club, band and Cantiones are offered outside of the school day for students who are interested in additional instruction in these areas.
- Art Club: Designed for students of all abilities, Art Club provides children with an environment to encourage exploration. Children paint, draw, sculpt, collage, design, imagine, sketch and explore using a wide variety of materials and techniques.
- Band: St. John School offers Beginner Band and Intermediate Band classes for students in grades 4-8 before school. The process of learning an instrument and being in a band is fun and rewarding, and students are expected to commit to attendance and practice.
- Drama – Middle School Musical: St. John School has a lively drama program for students in middle school. From acting, lighting, sound production, costume, stage design and stage screw, students in grades 6, 7 and 8 can explore their dramatic creativity, which culminates in the spring Middle School Musical.
- Cantiones Choir: Cantiones Choir offers interested students in grades 3-6 an opportunity for musical accomplishment in a fun and enriching environment. The choir sings at occasional Sunday liturgies, school assemblies, and parish and community events.
CYO Athletics
CYO Athletics is a great way to offer children exposure to a variety of sports in a fair and understanding atmosphere. Our goal is to inspire children to be active and find the sports they want to play and follow for the rest of their lives. Soccer, cross-country, volleyball, basketball and track and field are offered through CYO. Every family with children, regardless of ability to pay, who is a member of the Parish or school can participate in CYO sports.
STEM & Other Activities
St. John School offers several extracurricular activities, such as Chess Club, Lego Club and Math Olympiads to enrich students’ school life.
- Altar Servers: Students in fifth grade and up can participate in altar service. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to grow in their understanding and appreciation of the Mass. When they are adequately trained, servers are scheduled to help at Mass on a regular basis through eighth grade.
- Chess Club: St. John School afterschool Chess Club is designed for students who already understand and have familiarity with the rules of the game. Students will be paired off and participate in match play.
- Lego Club: Partnering with Play-Well Teknologies, St. John School offers students the opportunity to let their imaginations soar with tens of thousands of Lego® pieces and the guidance of Play-Well instructors.
- Math Olympiads: Students in grades 5 and 6 have the opportunity to participate in the Math Olympiads for Elementary and Middle Schools (MOEMS). MOEMS is a non-profit public foundation and provides opportunities for children to engage in creative problem-solving activities that help develop a child’s ability to reason, be logical and be resourceful.
Service
Rigorous academics are complemented by community service learning, instilling a sense of responsibility and empathy in our students. Our mission encourages students to serve others and make a positive impact in their local and global communities. Students act for the common good by organizing and supporting food drives and bake sales, preparing hygiene kits for persons experiencing homelessness, serving Thanksgiving meals to residents at local Catholic housing communities, and raising funds for orphans in Kenya.
Summer
To help keep your child’s mind, body, and spirit active, St. John teachers offer students an opportunity to continue making growth over the summer toward our schoolwide learning expectations through the Summer Learning Incentive program.
