The Seattle Opera is Coming to St. John!

We are thrilled to announce that The Seattle Opera’s tour production of Frida Kahlo and the Bravest Girl in the World is coming to perform on Friday, April 28, 2023, at 1:45pm for students in grades K-5 and the Middle School Drama Elective.

Based on Laurence Anholt’s children’s book of the same name, the opera tells the story of Mariana, a young girl living in Mexico City who has her portrait painted by Frida Kahlo. At first, Mariana is nervous about meeting Frida because of strange rumors about the eccentric artist. But Mariana quickly befriends Frida and learns two important lessons in the process: art can happen anywhere and the importance of being brave even when you feel scared. This interactive piece features a text that is half English and half Spanish and brings opera to life at school!

Ms. Villanueva, St. John music teacher, will incorporate elements of opera into her April music lessons. Students in grade 2 will also have two performance preparation classes led by The Seattle Opera’s teaching staff before the performance. We are very excited about this opportunity for our students to experience music, art, Spanish and history!
