Wellness Committee Update
Morning Movement: The Wellness Committee will be leading the second Morning Movement on Monday, June 12, from 8-8:15am. This is a school-wide (student, parent and teacher) short exercise session to improve focus, academics and mood/behavior of children during the school day. Please take 15 minutes out of your morning to participate! We are expecting much better weather!
Try Me Day: The Wellness Committee enjoyed hosting Try Me Days this year! Thank you, Chef Michael and the kitchen crew for all of their help and patience when we invaded the kitchen on these days. We are hoping to continue this activity next year since there are so many foods to introduce to the students.
The last Try Me Day of the year was on May 26. The students got to sample maitake and shiitake mushrooms. The elementary students enjoyed the mushrooms the most with 36% voting that they liked them. They learned that there are 2000 edible mushroom species but less than 100 are sold in stores. Mushrooms, or fungi, are considered a superfood by many due to their nutritious and sometimes medicinal properties. More information about mushrooms can be found here.
If you are interested in helping the Wellness Committee with our current or future activities focused on bringing wellness to the St. John community, please let us know! We are eager to have interested members. Please email amyebondurant@gmail.com or kathymacbeck@gmail.com.
