Counselor’s Corner, May 2025

Dear St. John Families,

Happy Mental Health Awareness Month! Mental health is an essential part of our overall well-being. Did you know it’s estimated that 1 in 6 youth aged 6-17 experience a mental health disorder each year? Additionally, nearly half of all Americans will meet the criteria for a diagnosable mental health condition at some point in their lives, with symptoms starting by age 14 for the majority of people.

Given these statistics, it’s more important than ever to raise awareness and foster open conversations about mental health. I encourage all parents and caregivers to review Seattle Children’s Hospital’s Guide: Mental Health and Your Child or Teen. This helpful resource provides an overview of mental health, signs to look for, and tips for supporting your child’s emotional well-being.

If you ever have concerns about your child’s mental health, please don’t hesitate to seek support. As your child’s school counselor, I offer short-term counseling services to all students, along with family consultation and referrals to community-based resources.

One valuable resource available to our entire St. John community is Care Solace, a free, confidential care coordination service that connects families with mental health providers. To get started, visit their website or call 888-515-0595. If you prefer, feel free to reach out to me directly, and I can happily assist you with the process.

Wishing you a healthy and peaceful May!
Ms. Shaw
