St. John Receives Donna Pierce Service Award

Service learning has become an integral component in St. John School’s religion curriculum.  Students gain a deep understanding of gospel values through active participation and reflection. Recently, a partner service organization, WestSide Baby, recognized St. John School with the Donna Pierce Service Award.
Last year, St. John sixth graders chose to partner with and embrace WSB by putting out a collection crib at the school entrance and encouraging families to donate clothing and other needed items that children have outgrown.  To make giving as easy as possible, sixth graders invite families to drop off and unload donations once a month.  Students volunteer at WSB White Center and South Lake Union locations 15 times per year bringing donations with them.  Most importantly, St. John School’s contributions helpe fill a huge need for clothing size 5-12.
Thank you to parent and WestSide Baby board member, Liz Overland, for facilitating this partnership.  Thank you to middle school religion teacher , Mari Halley, for helping our students to live our mission to “inspire moral development, academic excellence, and the courage to act for the common good.”
