Guest Speaker Series: Jasmine Bradshaw

We are honored to bring you Jasmine Bradshaw of First Name Basis as our next PA Guest Speaker on April 28, 7pm. Ms. Bradshaw is a researcher, anti-racist educator, and podcaster who believes that creating a more loving, inclusive, and just society starts within the sacred walls of our homes. Her podcast, First Name Basis, exists to give parents and caregivers the tools they need to raise anti-racist families. Jasmine invites her audience to wrestle with hard questions and use the answers to create the world we want: a world where every single child can be exactly who they are and reach their full potential. She hopes her community makes parents feel empowered and gives them the confidence they need to create lasting change in their sphere of influence.

We are eager to host this conversation; it is a fantastic follow-up to our Fall conversation with Dave Watson. We are delighted and proud that this community is so committed to staying in this conversation, as well as taking proactive steps toward allyship.

In her presentation, The First 3 Steps to Becoming an Anti-Racist Family, Jasmine will talk about:

  • What it means to be “anti-racist”
  • Where the anti-racism journey begins for parents
  • How to talk to your kids about race in developmentally appropriate ways
  • How to give your kids accurate language about race and culture
  • Specific steps you can take as a family in your anti-racist journey

As you anticipate this event, we highly recommend you listen to a few episodes of Jasmine’s podcast, First Name Basis. The PA event will take place virtually on Zoom on April 28, 7pm. Webinar information follows:

Grades K-4 Crafts for Ukraine, April 25 and 26

Our very own Veronika Wellnitz will be volunteering in Poland to help Ukrainian refugees, and she would love to deliver handmade signs of friendship and solidarity from our kids. Students in grade 5 got the ball rolling by making friendship bracelets and pocket art, and when we return from Easter Holiday, students in Kindergarten through grade 4 are invited to join in. We will be in Egan Hall after school on Monday, April 25 and Tuesday, April 26. Parents, feel free to stick around to make your own supportive artwork and help students with their projects, or just come pick your kids up after. We’ll meet at the flagpole and walk to Egan together. We ask that participants wear masks during the craft sessions.

  • Monday, April 25, 3-4:45pm: grades 3-4
  • Tuesday, April 26, 3-4:45pm: grades K-2

For those unable to attend and middle school students who would like to join in, you are welcome to leave friendship bracelets and small artwork in the box outside of Principal O’Leary’s office through May 13.
