Principal’s Letter

Be alert, stand firm in your faith, be brave, be strong. Do all your work in love.

Thank you, Auction Team! You showed us your love for St. John with all the work you did to make A Novel Soiree such a great event, yes, a bestseller! I sincerely thank co-chairs, Lauren and Andrew Exnicious, Chris Sourov, our sponsors and donors, and the many, many volunteers for giving so generously to this event. We could not do this without you! The giving isn’t quite over yet: you still have the opportunity to purchase 8th Grade Wines Glasses or sponsor students for “Skipping School for Sundaes.” Purchases must be completed by Sunday, March 24. See the auction post below for more details.

Monday, March 25, at 2:15pm, we will re-open the Officer Jackson Lone Playground. The play area is named after St. John alumni and Seattle Police Officer, Jackson Lone. Officer Lone died in the line of duty 19 years ago this month. Generous donations over the last two years have allowed us to re-open the play area with updated turf and play structures. Monday there will be a ribbon cutting ceremony, blessing by Fr. Crispin, and representatives from the Seattle Police Department will be present to honor Officer Lone. Please join us Monday afternoon for the re-dedication and donate to Fund-A-Need; we are still accepting gifts to help completely fund the project.

I also want to thank Girl Scout Troop 41622 (1st Grade Daisies to 6th Grade Cadettes) for living our mission. They used their proceeds from the Christmas Craft Fair and made over 100 first aid kits for the Ballard Food Bank. They are truly empowered disciples.

Thank you also to the families who volunteered to host the exchange students. On Monday, we welcome seven students from Japan who will spend the week here at school, mainly in the middle school classes. Be sure to give a warm St. John welcome to Ami, Hiona, Yuu, Rino, Sasa, Yuzuki and Miu.

And with the start of spring, thank you to parent volunteers Kari Aguila and Megan Richards for supporting our school garden. Students have started using the space again, and we appreciate your support of the recent seed sales.

Be sure to congratulate Brian Haid when you see him. A mainstay of CYO athletics – as a participant, parent, coach and coordinator – Brian is now St. John’s Athletic Director! Welcome, Brian! We are so lucky to have you on the team! Read more about him in today’s post.

Thanks to the 8th grade students and Parish for hosting tomorrow night’s Soup Supper in Egan Hall. Join us. And plan for Palm Sunday Mass this weekend. We will wave palms to commemorate Jesus’s triumphant entry to Jerusalem. Within a week, He is crucified and resurrected. Next week is Holy Week. May we persevere, as we accompany Jesus as He carries his cross.

Yours in Christ,

Bernadette O’Leary
